Or just head straight for Stowe and Burlington. Choose willoughby and make your loop as far north as Newport. You could cut any of the destinations and tighten your loop. But it is a full day, especially depending on how much you want to stop and do. I think this would give you a great taste of the diversity of what Vermont offers. The drive back from Burlington should be about 2 hours plus a bit, as it is more direct along quicker roads, and easier to drive at night. The whole route, from Lincoln to Willoughby to Stowe to Burlington is about 3 and a half hours of driving. The easy and quick rte from Stowe to Burlington is via I-89, but you can also take the slower scenic route back up rte 108 to rte 15 west to Essex and Burlington. For a smaller version, head to Montpelier, the state capital, instead. It is a lovely city on the shore of Lake Champlain, with a downtown walking mall, great shops and dining, nightlife. The Pemigewasset Trail to get to the summit starts in the last parking lot all the way to the left. Nothing says hipster Vermont like Burlington. Drive 0.4 miles and turn right into the Flume parking area. The trail is mostly packed gravel with boardwalk sections and includes moderate uphill walking and stairs within the gorge. There is also a Cabot Cheese factory and visitor center in Cabot, VT, which is closer to St J if you don't want to go this far.įrom Stowe, you have the option of heading to Burlington. This self-guided walk is 2 miles and takes approximately 1.5 hours. Also Ben & Jerry's factory, Cabot Cheese, and much more. The von Trapp Inn (of Sound of Music fame) is here. This is a major small town destination for skiing in winter and all kinds of activity year round. This is a beautiful part of what is known in Vermont as The Northeast Kingdom.įrom there i would take rte 15 to rte 108 to Stowe. Willoughby is a large pristine lake that at the southern end looks like a fjord, with the mountains plugging down straight into the lake. St J is nice small northern city with a couple of good museums and a small downtown to explore if you like. Get on I-91 north to St Johnsbury and switch over to rte 5 either there or in Lyndon. I would take rte 112 west across the mountains in nh to Bath and across to Vermont. Here's my loop suggestion, or destination suggestion.
